First grade

Ages 7-16

Students made different gesture drawings of their animal pictures inspired by Calder's wire sculptures. They were next told they were going to draw with wire to create the inside of the animal and not worry about the outline of the body. The animal had to be free standing. Beads were used for eyes.

PreK-K Pueblo Bird Pots

Children first drew Pueblo birds then painted the birds onto their paper mache pots.

Grades 4-5, Nevelson Sculptures

Found object towers and structures were built and glued together to symbolize something about the student's personality. The part of my personality this sculpture represents:...

PreK-K Aztec Sunstone Sculptures

In a wide mouth bowl, wet sand was first sculpted into a sun face using wood blocks and objects to make impressions. Then liquid plaster was carefully poured over the sand face. When dry, sunstones were taken out of sand mold, brushed off then painted with gold tempera.

PreK-K, Woven Earth Sculptures

Kindergarteners wove different color paper strips into their paper weavings to create a 3-dimensional sculpture. Strips represented snow, rivers, mountains, house, grassy hills according to colors. Beads represented people and animals that were glued on.

Grades 4-5, Clay Animals

Students in grades 4-5 first viewed images of metal sculptor Chris Williams, then looked to find an image of an animal. They were to think about what their animal was about to do. Starting with pinch pot technique, they formed the animal body, then head, legs, etc., scoring and slipping to attach parts. Next, texture was applied to show fur, scales, or armor, then they were painted.

Grades 1-3, Earth Houses

Students in 1st-3rd grades were inspired by images of earth houses in America. They were asked to imagine what materials they would use to build their house, where would it be located, and what important possessions would they take with them. Next they made earth houses using pinch pot technique, cut out door and window shapes, then added textures to represent their building materials such as grass, shells, recycled objects, stone, etc.
